FIRE RICK SPIELMAN

Not because of Joe Webb.  Not due to the loss to Green Bay.  Rick Spielman should be fired for a host of other reasons.  Taking Christian Ponder with the 12th overall pick in the 2011 draft is a good place to start.  The fact that the Vikings don’t have a legitimate #1 wide receiver is another huge issue that this GM has failed to address.  Minnesota fans should be happy today, because their team did in fact make the playoffs, and were really one of the surprises in the NFL.  Yet there is something that just doesn’t feel good about this organization right now.  Adrian Peterson had one of the greatest seasons ever by a running back.  The Vikings’ defense looked very good at times throughout the season, but the team never really looked like a true contender.

Normally when a team goes from 3-13 to 10-6 there are smiles all around.  Not right now.  Part of the issue is the Green Bay Packers.  When you take a look at that team, as well as the organization as a whole, you see a model for how to do it right.  They may not win a championship every year, but their fans always have legitimate hope of making it to the big game.  With Rick Spielman at the controls, I don’t think that Vikings or their fans will ever feel like that.  Having spent 14 years in South Florida, I watched as this man drove the Miami Dolphins organization into a hole so deep, they still haven’t recovered.

So the Vikings’ season is over.  They surprised everyone by making the playoffs.  They surprised nobody by losing in the first round.  Now it is time to look at the team and figure out how to take the next step.  Minnesota is a place where people are used to making the playoffs, but yet it’s been a long time since the Vikings made it to the Super Bowl.  Almost 40 years.  And of course, this team has never won that game, but the fans at least want legitimate hope.  Think the late 90′s under Dennis Green.  That team always made the playoffs and was a serious contender more than once. In 2009, Minnesota lost the NFC Championship fame with Brett Favre at the wheel, but that was a one year wonder and felt a little fraudulent even as it was happening.  The Vikings definitely need some pieces to get to the top.  Well, it should start with a new GM.
