This could be a long shortened season for the Caps

Three nights after being embarassed in the opening game 6-3 by Tampa Bay the Caps did not seem to do much better tonight as they drop their home opener to the Winnipeg Jets 4-2. The loss tonight ended a streak of ten straight home opener wins for the Caps. It also marks the Caps fourth straight loss to the Jets dating back to last season.
The Capitals are simply not playing good hockey to start off the season. In the last two games the Capitals have given up a total of 10 goals, 5 power play goals, and have had 46 minutes worth of penalties. Right now their defense is sloppy, their goaltending is mediocre at best, and their top line players have not played up to expectations.
One upside factor in this game for the Capitals was forward Matt Hendricks who had a goal to break his 15 game scoreless streak going back to March 10, 2009 when Hendricks last had a goal. Hendricks also did his part tonight by playing the role of goon getting into two fights, one with the Jets Jim Slater just after the second period ended and one in the third with Chris Thorburn. Caps center Nicklas Backstrom provided two assists and Troy Brouwer added the second goal in the third to cut the lead but it wasn’t enough.
Washington will have another chance to redeem themselves again on Thursday at the Verizion Center against the Montreal Canadians who are 1-1-0 coming off a 4-1 win over Florida.
