Wings Fall to Blues in Overtime

The Detroit Red Wings fell 4 – 3 to the St. Louis Blues in overtime on Wednesday night.
The Wings started hot and opened up a two goal lead on goals by Tomas Tatar and Drew Miller, but gave up three unanswered in a messy second period. Detroit would come back to tie it up on a crafty goal by Datsyuk in the third to send it to the extra frame, but an Alex Steen goal :52 seconds into overtime sealed the loss for Detroit.
The Wings were looking for their third straight victory over the Blues since their 6 – 0 blowout loss in the season opener, but were thoroughly outplayed by St. Louis. Detroit’s early season special teams struggles once again plagued their efforts for a win, going 0 for 5 on the power play and giving up both a short handed and a power play goal to the Blues. The Wings offense struggled to create chances against a stingy Blues defense, managing only 18 shots throughout the game, including only one shot on goal through the entire third period.
Neither goaltender looked comfortable in the game, and Blues’ rookie Jake Allen was lucky to get the win in his first career start. He only stopped 15 of Detroit’s 18 shots, and was hardly troubled past the second period by a stagnant Wings offense.
With the loss Detroit now falls to 7 – 5 – 1, and after a strong stretch of games are again showing a lack of consistency. The Wings will next face the Anaheim Ducks in Detroit on Friday night.
