The streaks stop here
Posted By Brendan Keelan On Feb 17 2013 @ 9:27 pm In Washington Capitals | No Comments
Tonight’s 2-1 loss in New York to the Rangers signifies the end of many streaks for the Capitals. The Capitals three game winning streak going into tonight was broken, and the Caps also failed at a chance to win three consecutive road games which they had not done in more than 13 years. They had also scored at least one power play goal in their last six games and that streak was also broken as they went 0 for 4 against New York.
Washington squared off against the Rangers for the first time this season, the last time these two met was in the Eastern Conference Semi-Finals in which the Rangers defeated the Caps in the series 4-3. After tonight’s win over the Caps the Rangers have now won seven of their last ten games. Rangers center Derek Stepan scored a power play goal in the third period to break the tie which is rare for the Rangers coming into the game only scoring 10.4 percent on the man advantage this season.
Capitals goalie Braden Holtby stopped 38 shots on 40 attempts by the Rangers and earned the third star of the game. That stat may be deceiving because it did not seem like the Rangers had 40 scoring chances, half of Holtby’s saves had come off of put backs after multiple rebound opportunities by New York. Does Holtby know how to use his glove? A couple of Capitals high points in this game were John Carlson scoring his second goal of the season. Also on that Carlson goal center Mike Ribeiro recorded his 400th career assist.
Washington returns home on Thursday night to face off against the New Jersey Devils for the second time this season. The Devils defeated the Capitals earlier this season on Jan. 25th in New Jersey in OT 3-2. The game is 7:00 pm ET at the Verizon Center as the Caps try to get back on track.
