Caps hand Bruins first loss to a Southeast Division team this season

Tonight’s game featured two teams facing each other for the first time this season. The last time the Caps and Bruins met was in the playoffs last year in game seven of the series in which the Caps won and advanced thanks to a goal by Joel Ward. In tonights game the Caps emerged victorious once again coming back from a three goal deficit winning 4-3 in overtime, the Caps handed the Bruins their first loss against a Souteast division team this season.
Washington goalie Braden Holtby made his 10th straight start between the pipes which is the longest run for a Caps goalie since back in 2003 when Olie Kolzig started 16 straight from October 17th-November 22nd. The recipe for success for the Bruins seems to be when they only give up two or less goals. When the other team scores four or more goals against the Bruins it is a recipe for disaster because there they lose every time.
The Capitals were without some key players tonight such as: top goal scorer Troy Brouwer (illness) and veteran defencemen Mike Green (groin, on IR) but it allowed some other Capital players to step up. Winger Eric Fehr recorded a goal scoring it in overtime to win the game for the Caps as well recorded two assists. A series of firsts were recorded for the Caps in tonight’s game such as defencemen Tomas Kundratek’s first ever NHL goal. The newest Capitals defencemen Steven Oleksy, who had just been signed to a three year, two way contract, made his NHL debut at age 27 and recorded his first NHL point which was an assist. In another Capitals defencemen note, veteran Roman Hamrlik was waived prior to tonight’s game.
Washington will try to move forward with this win and expand it into a winning streak against the Florida Panthers in the Verizon Center on Thursday Night. Game time is 7:00pm ET and the Panthers are currently in dead last in the Eastern Conference despite posting a 4-1 victory over the Winnipeg Jets tonight. Washington is 2-0 when facing Florida this season outscoring them 11-5.
