The San Francisco Giants are able to win the 2nd game of the opening series in Los Angeles beating the Dodgers 3-0. It’s the Giants’ first win of the young season.
Madison Bumgarner threw a gem on the mound throwing 8 shutout innings allowing only 2 hits, no walks, and struck out 6. The two hits he allowed were both doubles to Andre Ethier and A.J. Ellis. Sergio Romo came into the game in relief in the 9th getting a 1-2-3 inning striking out Mark Ellis to end the ballgame and record the save.
The LA crowd of over 45,000 got to see Hyun-Jin Ryu make his Major League debut. Ryu pitched 6 and a third innings allowing 3 runs, one earned, and striking out 5. The 26 year old left hander, however, would be credited with the loss.
Ryu had pitched in South Korea up to this point in his professional career for the Hanwha Eagles. He came over to the Dodgers after LA had secured negotiating rights from the Eagles at a tune of $25.7 million. Ryu then signed a 6 year $36 million contract with the Dodgers.
As for the offense, Joaquin Arias was the man to hit a one-out single to center to score in Buster Posey in the 4th inning. It was the first run for the Giants this season.
The Giants would tack on a couple more runs in the 7th inning for some insurance. After a Justin Sellers throwing error, a hit by Andres Torres, and a grounder to move the runners over to 2nd and 3rd base, Bumgarner grounded into to short with Sellers throwing it home and wide of Dodgers catcher A.J. Ellis. Sellers’ second error of the inning allowed both Arias and Torres to score for San Francisco.
All 10 hits for the Giants were singles with one walk worked by Pablo Sandoval in the 8th inning. Sandoval, however, did not get any of those hits.
Another two hit night for Angel Pagan to start the season going 2 for 4. Also going 2 for 4 were Hunter Pence and Joaquin Arias.
Series ends today at 10 PM eastern with Tim Lincecum of the Giants set to face Josh Beckett of the Dodgers. Lincecum had a down 2012 season going 10-15 with a 5.18 ERA. He spent the majority of the Giants World Series run last October in the bullpen. Beckett went 7-14 in 2012 overall with a 4.65 ERA. After being traded to the Dodgers, Beckett went 2-3 with a 2.93 ERA.
