The San Francisco Giants lose the season opener but still take the series.
The Giants take two out of three games in the opening series winning their second game last night over the Dodgers 5-3. San Francisco was down 1-0 when they had a 4-run third inning which included a 2-run home run by Pablo Sandoval, his first and the Giants first home run of the year.
Giants’ pitcher Tim Lincecum struggled with his command tonight walking 7, tie for a career worst, in 5 innings of work. Lincecum allowed a couple of unearned runs, one of which scored on a passed ball in the 1st, and did managed to get credited with the win. The Giants starters didn’t allow an earned run against the Dodgers in this series.
After Timmy left the game, Hunter Pence hit a insurance run in by himself with a solo shot the other way off Josh Beckett in the 6th. It was Pence’s only hit of the night.
Josh Beckett, in 6 innings of work, allowed all 5 runs in for the Giants with 3 of them being earned runs. He also struck out 4 and walked one.
The Giants bullpen initially had trouble carrying the load for Lincecum. Jose Mijares came in to pitch the bottom of the 6th and allowed the bases to get loaded with a couple of singles and then hitting Skip Schumaker with a pitch.
George Kantos then came in and got a much needed double play ball from Matt Kemp allowing just one Dodger run to score. Javy Lopez then came in to face Adrian Gonzalez and got him to strikeout swinging.
The bottom of 7th came up with Lopez still out there and giving up a lead off double to Andre Ethier. Chad Gaudin then came in for the Giants and got three straight fly ball outs to end the inning. Gaudin would pitch two innings and allowed only one hit.
Sergio Romo then came up into relief in the 9th and got another 1-2-3 inning ending the game on a strikeout facing Luis Cruz. It was Romo’s 2nd save of the year.
Giants are 2-1 as they head home to have their home opening series against the St. Louis Cardinals along with their championship ceremonies. First game of the series is 1:35 PM pacific tomorrow with Barry Zito facing Jake Westbrook. The Giants have not lost a game Barry Zito has started since August 2nd of 2012 winning 14 starts in a row. Zito went 2-0 in the 2012 postseason with a 1.69 ERA in 3 starts which included a game 1 World Series performance of 5 2/3 innings allowing only one run against the Tigers.
