Giants Sweep Rockies to End First Homestand

After a disappointing series with the St. Louis Cardinals, the San Francisco Giants recovered by sweeping the Colorado Rockies in a three game series. The Giants (6-3) finished the sweep of the Rockies (5-4) earlier today with a 10-0 win.

San Francisco got onto the board early today with 7 runs scored in the first 2 innings.

Buster Posey, who had the day off yesterday, was a big reason for the success in the first couple of innings scoring in a couple of runs with a triple in the 1st and then a ground rule double in the 2nd. Posey would end the day going 3-5 with 3 RBI’s and a home run short of the cycle.

While the Giants bats came alive, Barry Zito shut down the Rockies while on the mound. In 7 innings, Zito allowed no runs, 7 hits, 1 walk, and struck out 4.

Zito was also effective with the bat going 2-3 and even had a RBI single in the 5th that scored Andres Torres.

Torres had a fair game himself going 3-5 today with a couple of RBI’s in that 5-run 2nd inning. He went 4-9 in the series vs. the Rockies.

There was obviously no need for Sergio Romo today. Javier Lopez came in the 8th getting a 1-2-3 inning. Then Chad Gaudin did the same in the 9th inning to end the game and the series. Romo would get his 4th and 5th saves of the season in the first two games of the series with Colorado.

As for those first two games, Madison Bumgarner pitched 5 2/3 innings allowing 2 earned runs in the Giants 4-2 win on Monday. The game was was highlight by the fact Hunter Pence hit a 3-run home run in the 1st inning to give the Giants an early lead. He had 5 RBI’s in the series overall but went 0-5 in game 3.

In game 2, the Giants managed to stage a comeback after being down 6-2 after 5 innings. They ended up winning it 9-6 after a 4-run 6th to tie it and then a 3-run 8th to take the lead. Brandon Crawford had a big 3-run home run in the 6th to help mount the comeback. Crawford went 4-11 in the series with 4 RBI’s.

In that game 2 comeback, Tim Lincecum struggled allowing 6 earned runs in 6 innings of work. He did strike out 7 but allowed 4 hits and 4 walks.

Overall, Giants hitters had 38 hits in the series and 12 walks batting .365. Meanwhile, the Rockies batted .181 in the series with 17 hits.

The Giants can’t enjoy this for long as they head right to Chicago to start a 4 game series with the Cubs. First game is tomorrow at 2:20 PM eastern with Ryan Vogelsong (0-1) going against Carlos Villanueva (0-0). Vogelsong had a tough first outing against the Cardinals last Saturday allowing 5 runs in 5 1/ innings. Villanueva, meanwhile, pitched 6 2/3 innings against the Braves that same day allowing one run. The Cubs would still lose the game 6-5 with Villanueva getting a no decision.
