After winning three out of four games in Chicago, the San Francisco Giants got swept in their following series against the Brewers.
All three games in Milwaukee go to the Brewers (6-8) as the World Champs lost game 3 earlier today 7-2. After a DUI arrest earlier this week, Yovani Gallardo pitched a fine game against the Giants (9-7) going 6 innings, striking out 6 and allowing 1 run, 5 hits and one walk. Gallardo gets credited with his first win of the season (1-1).
Gallardo, in fact, also contributed to run department as well hitting a 2-run home run in the 2nd inning to make it 5-0.
It was the second of three 2-run home runs by the Brewers with the 1st being hit by Ryan Braun in the 1st inning and the 3rd being hit by Jonathan Lucroy in the 3rd inning.
Matt Cain (0-2) gave up all three of the Brewers home runs as he pitched 6 innings allowing 7 earned runs on 7 hits. Cain would get 4 strikeouts as he still looks for his first win of the season.
The Giants didn’t do much in this game offensively. Brandon Belt hit in Brandon Crawford on a sac fly to center. Then, as a consolation run, Brandon Crawford hit a solo home run in the 9th.
Crawford was the most productive Giant in the series going 7-12 and hitting 2 home runs. He’s now on a 11 game hitting streak and raises his batting average to .352.
Pablo Sandoval’s 10 game hitting streak came to end as he went 0-4 against the Brewers earlier today.
Reining NL MVP Buster Posey did not play against the Brewers today. He went 1-8 in the first two games of the series. Posey’s batting average drops to .213 and he still doesn’t have a home run this season.
As for the rest of the series, the Giants were playing catchup for the most of game 1 as the Brewers had a 8-run 3rd inning which included a Yuniesky Betancourt grand slam to make it 9-3. Barry Zito gave up 9 earned runs in his 2 2/3 innings as the Giants lost 10-8 trying to mount a comeback. It was the first time the Giants had lost a Zito start since August 2, 2012.
Game 2 had the Giants managing to comeback from a 3-0 deficit to tie it in the 6th inning with three runs. The Brewers, however, managed to walk off with a win in the 9th when Blake Lalli pinch hit with the bases loaded to hit a deep single to left field scoring in Josh Prince from third. Final score was 4-3.
The Giants now head home to face the visiting San Diego Padres (5-10) in a three game series. Probables for the Giants are Madison Bumgarner (3-0), Tim Lincecum (1-0), and Barry Zito (2-1). The Padres probables are Edinson Volquez (0-3), Clayton Richard (0-1), and Eric Stults (2-1).
