Giants Win 5-0 and Sweep the Padres

After their disappointing series in Milwaukee, the world champions come home and manage a redeeming sweep.
The San Francisco Giants (12-7) finished a three game sweep of the San Diego Padres (5-13) yesterday by a final of 5-0. Barry Zito managed to recover from his worst career outing to get the win over the Padres advancing to 3-1 on the season. Zito pitched 7 shutout innings, striking out 4, and allowed 5 hits and 1 walk.
“I felt pretty good in my game and the results weren’t there last (time). I felt pretty good today and the results were there. That’s just the nature of the game,” Zito said after the win over San Diego.
Though his ERA is 3.42 exiting today, Zito hasn’t allowed a run in 3 of his 4 starts this year. All his runs were given up last Tuesday vs. the Brewers allowing 9 earned.
Chad Gaudin came into the game in the 8th inning for the Giants pitching two strong innings out of the pen allowing only one hit and striking out two.
As for their 5 runs, the Giants started to produce in the 3rd inning. Angel Pagan hit a 2-run double followed up by Pablo Sandoval getting an RBI single to get in Pagan.
Then in the 5th, Buster Posey finally got in the Home Run column this season hitting a 2-run home run for insurance against the Padres. However, the 2012 NL MVP is still hitting under .250 for the season (.233).
Eric Stults (2-2) of the Padres pitched 7 innings allowing 5 earned runs on 8 hits. He would get only 2 strikeouts as his ERA gets raised to 4.70 in four starts.
The Padres had runners in scoring position twice early in the 1st and 2nd inning. Those runners only got on base when there were two outs and San Diego failed to get them farther than 2nd base.
Game 1 of the series ended with Angel Pagan hitting a walk off double to right field giving San Francisco a 3-2 win. That snapped the Giants three game losing streak at the time.
Pablo Sandoval provided all the offense in game 2 hitting a 2-run home run in the 4th inning. The Giants would shutout the Padres in a 2-0 win with Tim Lincecum (2-0) going 6 2/3 innings striking out 8 allowing 4 hits and 2 walks.
The bullpen would take over for Lincecum with Sergio Romo coming into the game in the 9th to record his 8th save of the year.
The next series for the Giants has them staying at home to take on the visiting Arizona Diamondbacks (10-8) in a three game set which starts tonight. San Francisco’s probables are Ryan Vogelsong (1-1), Matt Cain (0-2), and Madison Bumgarner (3-0). Arizona’s probables are Wade Miley (2-0), Patrick Corbin (2-0), and Ian Kennedy (1-2).
The D’backs just avoided getting swept by the Rockies as they ended Colorado’s 8 game winning streak yesterday. A two run top of the 9th inning gave the D’backs the win 5-4.
