The San Francisco Giants are heading back home after going 3-3 on this last six game road trip.
After getting swept out of San Diego, the Giants (16-12) manage to rebound by sweeping the Arizona Diamondbacks (15-13) in a three game series in their own home building. They completed the sweep with a 9-6 win over the D’Backs last night with Brandon Belt playing the hero again hitting a 3-run home run in the 8th inning to give San Francisco a 7-6 lead.
Belt was on in this series going 3-10, hitting 2 home runs along with 6 RBI’s. All three of Brandon’s home runs this year have come with 2 strikes and against the D’Backs.
The Giants would add two more in the 9th inning with Pablo Sandoval doubling in Angel Pagan and then Buster Posey hitting a sac fly to get in Brandon Crawford.
Sergio Romo then came in relief in the bottom of the 9th allowing just one hit as he closed out the game for his 11th save of the year.
It looked like San Francisco wouldn’t have to make a comeback to win this contest. Angel Pagan started the game off with a solo home run, his first of the year, on just the second pitch from Brandon McCarthy.
The D’Backs, however, answered back with a 3-run home run by shortstop Cliff Pennington in the 2nd inning off of Tim Lincecum. That was also Pennington’s first home run of the season.
Lincecum would go just 5 innings allowing 5 earned runs and 10 hits while striking out 6. Timmy would allow an RBI double by Eric Chavez in the 4th inning and then a RBI single by Paul Goldschmidt in the 5th.
McCarthy of the Diamondbacks wasn’t much better allowing 4 earned in 6 innings of work. Giants scored two in the 5th with an RBI double by Pagan and an RBI triple by Crawford. Angel Pagan would finish the game going 2-4 with 2 RBI’s, 3 runs, and the home run hit in the 1st.
Hunter Pence then hit a solo home run in the 6th marking his 5th home run of the year.
The D’Backs would extend their lead 6-4 with an RBI Double by Cliff Pennington off of reliever Javier Lopez. Pennington went 2-4 on the night with 4 RBI’s, including that 3-run home run in the 2nd.
After that, Belt’s 8th inning home run gave San Francisco the lead back for good.
It was late inning heroics for Belt and the Giants in the other two games of the series. Game 1 had Brandon Belt breaking a 4-4 tie with a 2-single to center to help get the Giants a 6-4 victory.
Game 2 had Pablo Sandoval rescuing San Francisco from a loss in the 9th inning with a 2-run home run to take the lead. Giants would win 2-1. That was Sandoval’s 4th home run of the year as Pablo went 5-12 in the series with 4 RBI’s.
The Giants now head home to take on their rivals, the Los Angeles Dodgers (13-14). The Dodger blue just finished a home series against the Colorado Rockies winning 1 out of a 3 game series.
San Francisco’s probables for their next series are Barry Zito (3-1), Ryan Vogelsong (1-2), and Matt Cain (0-2). Los Angeles’ probables are Clayton Kershaw (3-2), Ted Lilly (0-1), and Hyun-Jin Ryu (3-1). The Giants were in LA to start the season off taking 2 out of 3 from the Dodgers.
