The Brooms in the stands were in fact used last night.
The San Francisco Giants (19-12) managed to complete a three game sweep of the Los Angeles Dodgers (13-17) with a 4-3 win on Cinco de Mayo. The Giants sweep at AT&T marks their 6th win in a row. The Dodgers, meanwhile, have lost 4 in a row as they head back to LA to take on the visiting Diamondbacks.
The Giants were out to a 4-run lead after a 2-run double by Hunter Pence in the 5th inning. Pence actually went 2-4 managing to hit in all 4 runs for the Giants. Hunter hit in Marco Scutaro from third on a fielder’s choice in the 1st inning and then hit an RBI double in the 3rd scoring in Scutaro once again.
Matt Cain (1-2) finally gets credited with his first win of 2013. It was his 7th start of the season. Cain went 7 1/3 innings with allowing one earned run by way of the relievers. Cain struck out 4 while allowing 5 hits and 3 walks.
Dodgers pitcher Hyun-Jin Ryu (3-2) gets the loss with 6 innings of work allowing 4 runs on 8 hits and 2 walks. Both his losses came against the Giants.
The Dodgers had a 3-run 8th inning rally. With 2 outs, Adrian Gonzalez pinched hit for 3B Luis Cruz and managed to hit a 2-run single up the middle off reliever Jeremy Affeldt. Then Dee Gordon manage to reach 1st on an infield single allowing Juan Uribe from 3rd to score.
Jean Machi then came in as the 4th reliever in the inning for the Giants to face pinch hitter Jerry Hairston Jr. Machi would get Hairston to ground out to shortstop Brandon Crawford to retire the side.
Though it was a productive 8th inning, the theme of the night for the Dodger’s hitters till then was leaving runners in scoring position. They were 0-9 with runners in scoring position entering the 8th. They ended up leaving 9 runners on base in the game.
Sergio Romo then came into the 9th and managed a 1-2-3 fly ball inning for his 12th save of the year. That ties Romo with Jason Grilli of Pittsburgh for the most saves in the Majors.
All three wins for the Giants were of the one run variety with the first two games ending in walk off fashion.
Game 1 had a pitchers duel started by Clayton Kershaw and Barry Zito tied at 1-1 in the 9th inning. Buster Posey then managed to hit a walk off home run off of LA reliever Ronald Belisario to win the game 2-1. It was Posey’s 4th home run of the year as he went 5-10 with 4 RBI’s in the series.
Game 2 was a bit different as the Giants blew a 6-1 lead when the Dodgers managed a 7-run 5th inning off of Ryan Vogelsong and Jean Machi. The Giants managed to tie the game twice in the 6th and 7th innings with the score at 9-9 heading into extras.
Then the last position player off the bench for San Francisco, Guillermo Quiroz, pinched hit for the pitcher to hit a walk off home run to left field in the bottom of the 10th. It was Quiroz’s first home run of the year as the Giants won it 10-9.
Quiroz played in last night’s game 3 as the catcher with Buster Posey at first base. The 31 year old catcher’s walk off magic ran out as Quiroz went 0-4 on Sunday.
An injury of note for the Giants as CF Angle Pagan had to leave in the middle of Saturday’s game with a hamstring injury. He is listed as day to day.
Andres Torres batted for Pagan in the lead off spot on Sunday night going 3-4. Francisco Peguero filled for Pagan in the outfield getting a double on Saturday. Peguero would score on a sac fly by Pablo Sandoval to tie the game at 9-9. However, the 24 year old outfielder went 0-4 during Sunday’s win batting 6th in the lineup.
The Giants now take on the visiting Phillies (14-18) in a three game series. San Francisco’s probables are Madison Bumgarner (3-0), Tim Lincecum (2-1), and Barry Zito (3-1). Philadelphia’s probables are Cliff Lee (2-2), Kyle Kendrick (3-1), and Jonathan Pettibone (2-0).
