Bowling Green, Ohio — Oh man what a dream!
Your old Uncle Mel woke up in a panic Monday morning, stumbling and mumbling just before the tasting of the first cup of coffee of the day and before getting the news that is making those baseball fans that follow teams in the Mid-American Conference scratch there heads and doing a double take before they start drinking doubles.
From the corn fields that surround the city and that slab of highway that reaches out and hugs the unsuspecting tourist that travels interstate 75, the quaint city of Bowling Green, Ohio greets all of those that pass by the city onward to the desired destination.
It is also the home of the World Tractor Pulls and is now the home of the 2013 winner of the Mid-American Conference Baseball Tournament, the Falcons of Bowling Green State University.
The Falcons defeated Rich Maloney and his Ball State University squad 7-0, Sunday May 26, 2013 winning the MAC Championship for the first time since 1999 and earning a trip to play in the NCAA Baseball Tournament.
Bowling Green scored all of their seven runs in the fifth inning giving the Falcons a comfortable lead.
Bowling Green State University baseball coach, Danny Schmitz, an Eastern Michigan University former player and graduate showed the fine education that he received at Eastern Michigan University and placed the ball in the capable hand of Falcons’ starting pitcher, Nick Bruns.
Bruns threw a complete game against the Cardinals and finished the tournament with two wins, one save and no earned runs. For his stellar work and effort, he also won the 2013 Mid-American Conference Baseball Tournament MVP.
“I can’t be prouder about a group of young men than I am right now,” Schmitz said after the game. “I’ll tell you, two months ago if anyone said we would be standing here as MAC champions, I would not have believe them but that is a credit to our guys they worked hard.”
“It feels awesome!” Bruns said after winning the championship game. “This why you come to BG and it is a special feeling.”
Bowling Green State finished with a conference record of 13-14 and a 24-29 overall record good enough for a fourth place finish in the East Division of the league.
For Maloney and for his team, it looked like and felt like that the scenario could have been written for a movie-what a script!
Maloney said good by and left Ball State University for the bright and hot spot light of the University of Michigan but after five years, Maloney left Ann Arbor, Michigan going back home to Muncie and back home to Ball State University for a second time. With just one more win and the Cardinals would have been lifting up the trophy and waiting by the phone waiting for the call
The prodigal son’s return home.
The Falcons and Bruns would have something to say about the outcome and the ending of this particular Hollywood script.
The Falcons’ offense will feature a team batting average of .277, an on-base percentage of .349 and a slugging percentage of .352 and when it comes to power the Falcons have hit 14 home runs and scored 274 runs for the season.
Bowling Green’s pitching staff ERA is 3.74 giving up 192 earned runs while striking out 315 and walking just 180 for 53 games.
Bowling Green State University will be playing in the Louisville, Kentucky Regional at Jim Patterson Stadium beginning Friday May 31, 2013 starting at 6 p.m.
The Falcons will face the University of Louisville, the host of the tournament and the No.1 seed.
Joining Bowling Green and Louisville will be the Miami University Hurricanes and the Oklahoma State Cowboys both teams have been in the NCAA in fact they could even be legends.
Uncle Mel is wondering if mint juleps have an off season?
There will be a lot of fire power by the banks of the mighty Ohio River and if Bowling Green State University wants to move on down the river instead of up the river, then they will be hoping that the old baseball saying that good pitching will beat good hitting comes true for the Falcons.
For the Falcons and Schmitz it is simple recipe for success to follow.
The offense will need to hit more doubles than the other teams and produce more runs. Let the Falcons’ pitchers spin their magic and then perhaps those fans that follow Bowling Green State University baseball will be mixing and lifting doubles in celebration and toasting the Falcons and Schmitz-for making dreams come true.
