In tonight’s Battle of the Beltways between the O’s and Nats the O’s Chris Davis played one of his best games of the season on the same night that Camden Yards featured “Crush” Davis T-Shirts that were given out to fans. Davis went 4 for 4 in this game with two homers and three RBI’s, and if he can perform like that on his T-Shirt night, then perhaps the O’s should print out some more and give them out every night. The O’s battled back from an early four run deficit to defeat the Nationals by a score of 9-6.
The turning point was O’s batting around the order in the seventh inning to score six runs off of Nationals pitcher Jordan Zimmermann who ended up taking the loss in this game. He pitched six innings gave up ten hits, six runs, one walk and three strikeouts, this was the first time since April 15th that Zimmermann had given up three or more runs in a game, he had also lasted at least seven innings in all of his starts since April 21st before tonight. Chris Tillman took a no decision for the Orioles tonight thanks to Manny Machado’s double in the seventh inning that tied the game and saved him from a loss. Tillman pitched four and two-thirds innings giving up eight hits, six runs, one walk and four strikeouts making him the seventh starter out of the eight to not complete six innings which is tiring out the bullpen.
One surprise tonight was Oriole Ryan Flaherty, who was just recently called back up from Triple-A Norfolk where he was improving, to start this game. Flaherty, who hasn’t done much with the bat this year, went 2 for 4 with an RBI double in his first at bat tonight. Nick Markakis went 2 for 4 tonight with a solo home run and two RBI’s, and Steve Pearce also added a two-run homer for the O’s. The winning pitcher in this contest was Steve Johnson who came out of the bullpen and pitched two and one-third scoreless innings, if he could’ve gone a few more innings he could be a starter again.
One Nationals highlight was third baseman Ryan Zimmerman hitting three homers in his first three at-bats. The next game between these two in-state rivals will be tomorrow at 7 pm/ET at Camden Yards where Dan Haren (WSH) will face off against Freddy Garcia (BAL). As a sidenote, there was a rumor that Ryan Zimmerman was seen talking with Chris Tillman after the game about Tillman possibly becoming Zimmerman’s pitcher for this years Home Run Derby if Zimmerman is invited.
