O’s win the series over the Astros despite all the strikeouts

If you had to define this series between the O’s and Astros with only one term it would probably be: strikeouts. These two teams combind for 55 strikeouts in this series after today which is one out more than the total number of outs in one baseball game. That number also adds up to more than one-third of the outs in the entire series. Both teams today had double digit strikeout victims, but it was the O’s who came out the winner winning 3-1 making them 7-3 in rubber games this season (6-2 on the road).
O’s started Miguel Gonzalez, who in his last three starts (four of his last five) had only pitched and earned no decisions, he earned the win today pitching six innings giving up five hits, one run, one walk and seven strikeouts, which ties his season high. This win was Gonzalez’ first since April 23rd, he now improves to 3-2 overall this season and 8-4 in his career on the road.
The offensive highlights for the O’s today were shortstop J.J. Hardy going 4 for 4 with three singles, a double and an RBI making it his first 4-hit game this season, center fielder Adam Jones added an RBI double and right fielder Chris Dickerson scored on a wild pitch. Baltimore record those three runs and nine hits off of Astros starter Bud Norris who was the losing pitcher in the game making his record 5-5 for the season. Norris being the losing pitcher in this game was not expected coming into this game because dating back to last season Norris had pitched great whenever pitching in Minute Maid Park, he had a record of 7-2 and an ERA of 1.83.
Although the O’s took the series from the Astros, having strikeouts accounting for one-third of your outs in a single game or a three game series is unacceptable. It is also scarry to see players like Chris Davis and Manny Machado have multiple strikeout games. The next game for the O’s will be in Florida as they move East to Tampa Bay to square off with the Rays for a three game series. Game time tomorrow is 7:10 pm/ET, probables will be Jason Hammel (BAL) and Chris Archer (TB).
