Teheran Stumps Giants; Braves Win Rubber Match

Sunday night belonged to the Braves and Julio Teheran.

The San Francisco Giants (35-33) end their nine game road trip losing two-out-of-three in Atlanta. The Braves (41-28) took the rubber match between the two by a final of 3-0. Julio Teheran (W, 5-3) pitched six shutout innings against the World Champs and struck out eight while allowing seven hits and one walk.

This was Teheran’s second win over the Giants this season.

Meanwhile, Giants starter Tim Lincecum (L, 4-7) last six innings as well but was sloppier than Teheran. Timmy would walk five batters in the game, three of those given to the lead off hitter in each of the first three innings.

Lincecum also allowed six hits, the first of those to Freddie Freeman in the 1st inning who hit in Andrelton Simmons from 2nd to give the Braves an early one-run lead.

Atlanta would follow that up with another run in the third when B.J. Upton doubled in a run with two men on base. His brother Justin Upton would score from 2nd.

Timmy would avoid the big inning throughout. After giving up the RBI double to B.J. Upton, he would intentionally walk Brian McCann to load the bases and then got Chris Johnson to ground out to short into an inning ending double play.

The sixth gave Lincecum more trouble. A single by Ramiro Pena should’ve just been a single but the ball goes off of left fielder Andres Torres’ foot and goes to the wall allowing Pena to get to 3rd.

Jordan Schafer would pinch hit for Teheran after the Torres’ error. A squeeze play was on as Schafer dropped a sac bunt to Timmy allowing Pena to score from 3rd.

The Giants batters, meanwhile, couldn’t get anything going against Julio Teheran. Perhaps their best chance was in the 4th inning when the bases were loaded with two outs. Joaquin Arias step up to the plate and hit a sinking fly ball to left. Justin Upton, however, made a diving grab to make the out and end the threat.

“I thought it was going to be trouble (on Upton’s play),” Teheran said, “but everybody starting clapping and I was pretty excited.”

San Francisco’s next chance to score some runs came in the 6th inning. Three singles help load the bases with two outs. Nick Noonan then came up to the plate and flied out to Upton in left to retire the top of the inning.

The Giants would not get another man on base after the 6th. Despite their good offensive numbers on this nine game road trip, the Giants stranded eight men on base and were 1-7 with runners in scoring position. The one hit was an infield single by Arias in the 6th to load the bases with two outs.

Luis Avilan and Jordan Walden both got 1-2-3 innings in the 7th and 8th respectively for Atlanta. Craig Kimbrel did the same in the 9th getting two strikeouts and his 19th save of the season.

Thankfully the road trip ends as the world champs come back to San Francisco to take on the visiting San Diego Padres (35-34) in a three game series. San Francisco’s probables are Barry Zito (4-5), Matt Cain (5-3), and Madison Bumgarner (6-4). San Diego’s probables are Edinson Volquez (5-5), Andrew Cashner (5-3), and Eric Stults (6-5).
