This rubber game featured two teams with the top two best team batting averages in the American League, the Detroit Tigers (#1) and the Baltimore Orioles (#2). In this game it was Baltimore who showed up looking like #1 as they brutally beat Detroit by a score of 13-3 to win the rubber game and the season series with the Tigers 4-2. The Orioles now improve to 8-3 in rubber games (5-2 on the road) and now move closer to first place in the AL East Division.
The Orioles batted around the order in the fourth scoring six runs to break the game open. Superstar first baseman Chris Davis had a huge day going 3 for 5 with two home runs and five RBI’s making this his second two home run game and second five RBI game this season. Davis has now hit four home runs in his last four games, six and fourteen RBI’s in his last nine games. The first home run he hit was off of starter Rick Porcello, which was his third career home run off of him. Porcello earned the loss for the Tigers pitching six innings giving up nine hits, six earned runs and striking out four, he now drops to a 1-5 record in his career against the O’s.
Catcher Taylor Teagarden also hit a big three-run homer in the fourth to get his first homer and first three RBI’s of the season; also his first hit this season with runners in scoring position. Teagarden isn’t unfamiliar with hitting homers when facing Detriot. On July 14th, 2012 in the 13th inning of a O’s-Tigers game at Camden Yards, in his first game as on Oriole, he hit a walk off home run to win the game, recording his first hit as an Oriole and his first walk off of his career. Baltimore has now hit at least one homer in nine straight games at Comerica Park.
Orioles center fielder Adam Jones knocked in three runs in this game, Manny Machado and J.J. Hardy also had one RBI each. Left fielder Nate McLouth went 3 for 5 with two doubles and a single. Six Orioles today had multi-hit games, and the team ended up with seventeen in the end.
Chris Tillman earned his eighth win for the O’s pitching five plus innings giving up seven hits, three earned runs, three walks and only striking out one. Tillman continues to be hot as a bonfire now winning his fourth straight start and fifth of his last six. In the month of June alone this season he is now 4-0 and continues to stay undefeated on the road in his career.
The O’s have an off day tomorrow but Friday they head just a little north of Detroit, across the border to Canada to square off in a three game series with the Toronto Blue Jays. Game time Friday is 7:07 pm/ET probable starters to be named later.
