Unknown starting pitcher doesn’t scare the Orioles

Coming into tonight’s game the only Oriole on the current roster to ever face Indians starter Corey Kluber was Danny Valencia who had faced him twice and was hitless. If you are facing a pitcher that none of your players know about or have no experience batting against, it is common to think your players would get psyched out. That was not the case tonight for the Orioles who were facing Corey Kluber as their bats performed well to earn a 7-3 victory.
The real offensive action for the O’s started in the fifth inning when they were down 3-2. They batted around the lineup scoring five runs on six hits, the only Oriole batter to not get at least one hit in this ballgame was first baseman Travis Ishikawa who went 0 for 4. Corey Kluber earned the loss for the Tribe pitching four and two-thirds innings giving up all seven runs on eleven hits, one walk and four strikeouts, this broke Kluber’s three start winning streak and dropped him to 6-5 on the year.
Miguel Gonzalez for the O’s, who was compared evenly to Corey Kluber in the month of June both with 3-1 records, earned his sixth win of the season tonight. He pitched six and two-thirds innings giving up nine hits, three runs, no walks and nine strikeouts. Gonzalez has now won four of his last five and has lasted at least five innings in those five.
Orioles second baseman Ryan Flaherty went 2 for 3 in tonight’s game which included a two-run single in the second, Flaherty extended his hitting streak to seven games. He also extended his hitting streak whenever facing Cleveland to ten straight Indian games with a hit. Flaherty played both second and third base because Manny Machado was ejected in the fifth inning for arguing a strikeout call with the home plate umpire, that ejection ended Machado’s streak of consecutive innings played at 1,206. Catcher Matt Wieters went 2 for 4 with a two-run triple, and Orioles Chris Davis, J.J. Hardy and Nick Markakis also added RBI’s.
There was a rain delay in this game that lasted 1 hour and 18 minutes which couldn’t stop the O’s from finishing what they started. The O’s now will host the Yankees who are coming into to Camden Yards for a AL East rivalry. The probables for the first game tomorrow are T.J. McFarland (BAL) vs. David Phelps (NYY) at 7 pm.
