The Tampa Bay Rays extended their winning streak to seven games with a 4-3 victory over the Minnesota Twins in 13 innings.
Yunel Escobar got the winning rally started with a one-out single on a grounder back up the middle. After Desmond Jennings flew out for the second out of the inning, Escobar advanced to second base on a wild pick off throw by Twins reliever Ryan Pressly. Luke Scott then drew a seven-pitch walk, reaching base for the fifth time.
That brought up Ben Zobrist, the Rays’ lone representative in the All-Star Game next week. Pressly quickly got ahead in the count 1-2. Zobrist then fouled off a pitch before ripping the next one into the rightcenter field gap, scoring Escobar and sending the Rays fans home happy.
The Rays got their first run back in the second inning. Wil Myers and Kelly Johnson led off the inning with consecutive singles. Jose Molina then bunted the runners over, and Escobar drove in Myers with a sacrifice fly.
The Twins struck right back off of Jeremy Hellickson in the top of the third inning. Eduardo Escobar singled and then Pedro Florimon hit a two-run homer, giving the Twins a 2-1 lead.
The Twins extended their lead in the fifth inning, when Aaron Hicks doubled and then scored on an RBI single by Clete Thomas.
The Rays evened the score in the bottom of the sixth inning, when Johnson hit a two-run homer. This hit knocked Twins starting pitcher Kevin Correia out of the game, and from this point on both bullpens would hold their opposition scoreless until the Rays finally won it in the 13th inning.
Hellickson wound up working six innings, allowing three runs on six hits. He struck out eight batters while walking none. The Rays bullpen then combined to work seven shutout innings, allowing six hits, one walk and striking out 11.
The Rays will go for their eighth straight win and the sweep tomorrow at 12:10 pm ET. They will send Matt Moore (12-3, 3.42 ERA) to the mound, while Mike Pelfrey (4-6, 5.63 ERA) will pitch for the Twins.
