Trade Deadline Talks, Rumors

Posted By Tyler Hetu On Jul 20 2013 @ 5:03 pm In MLB | No Comments

With the MLB All-Star Break fresh in the rearview mirror, numerous teams are scrambling to assemble a good second half team in hopes of pulling themselves into the postseason and to possibly win a World Series. With the trade deadline coming up on July 31st, teams in contention are looking to deal with non-contenders to help boost themselves to a playoff birth.

Pitchers Matt Garza and Bud Norris are candidates to be dealt before or at the deadline, and most likely will be dealt. In fact, reports from Buster Olney and BleacherReport have said that a deal has already been made for Garza, but it does not say where to. One team I know of that is in the Matt Garza sweepstakes is the Texas Rangers, who are 2 games behind the Oakland A’s for first place.

As for Bud Norris, I cannot say where he is going to end up. My prediction is that he will end up in an American League park, possibly in Cleveland as an attempt to strengthen their rotation. The Astros will try and sell him high, trying to get whatever they can out of their “ace”, but its guaranteed they wont get much. Norris is only 6-9, with a 3.91 ERA, 83 strikeouts, and a WHIP of 1.43 . He’s lost two in a row, and with his next start against a hot Oakland A’s his stock isn’t very high.

The White Sox are another team that could be making moves soon. The ChiSox are starting the second half with the second-worst record in the American League and a farm system that’s in complete disrepair. The magazine “Baseball America” has the Sox’s minor league organization ranked 29th, while ESPN has it ranked at 28th in the MLB. Whether the fire sale is now, or at the end of the season, look for big names to be moving out of U.S. Cellular Field. Possible players that could be moved are Alex Rios, and possibly even Jake Peavy could be wearing a new uniform on August 1.

Many players and teams have been thrown into the rumor mill the past few weeks. With regular season baseball half over, several teams on the playoff bubble need to make crucial moves in order to have a chance of playing postseason baseball. Who’ll make the first move?

I guess we’ll have to find out what happens on July 31st.
