O’s four HOMErs help knock Red Sox out of first place and end three game losing streak

The O’s came back home to Baltimore to face off against the first place Red Sox in a three game series, desperately needing some wins. Boston has been at the top of the AL East standings since May 27th which is a total of 59 days. That streak was broken tonight along with the O’s three game losing streak thanks to a 6-0 Orioles shutout of the Red Sox and a Rays victory over the Yankees to put the Rays in first.

Baltimore hit four home runs in this ballgame including two from Adam Jones which were both to right field, a place where Jones, before tonight, had only only homered to four times since 2008. This was Jones’ first multi-home run game this season and the third of his career, four of the O’s six runs tonight came when there were two outs and no one on. Orioles Manny Machado and J.J. Hardy added the other two homers. The last time the O’s hit four homers in one game was earlier this season on May 29th at home when they hosted the Nationals.

Orioles starter Chris Tillman put on a masterful pitching performance going seven innings, allowing only two hits, no runs, three walks and eight strikeouts. Tillman earned the win tonight making him 2-0 this season when facing the Red Sox. He has won nine of his last ten starts and improves to 13-3 on the year making him the first Oriole since Erik Bedard in 2007 to win 13 games in a season.

Boston starter John Lackey, who usually causes trouble for the O’s whenever he faces them, earned the loss tonight pitching six and one-third innings giving up nine hits, five runs (three of the four Oriole homers), one walk and two strikeouts. The Red Sox streak of four straight games with starters only allowing three earned runs in a game was snapped. Baltimore is now 30-20 when facing Boston under Buck Showalter, 47-20 when scoring 4 or more runs, and 30-20 at home.

This series continues tomorrow at 7:00 pm/ET at Camden Yards when the O’s will send Scott Feldman to the mound to face Boston’s Ryan Dempster.
