Lincecum Keeps Brewers in Check; Giants Win 4-1

He looked like Timmy of old.

Starter Tim Lincecum was dominant against the visiting Milwaukee Brewers (49-66) pitching eight shutout innings allowing just one hit and one walk. The Giants would win the game 4-1 with Lincecum (6-11) getting his first win since his No-Hitter on July 13th.

The two-time Cy Young Award Winner threw a total of 108 pitches during his Thursday start recording eight strikeouts. Perhaps Lincecum would’ve been able to go for the complete game shutout if not for a blister on one of his fingers.

As for offense, Giants first baseman Brandon Belt made sure Timmy had plenty of run support early on. Belt hit a three-run homer in the 1st inning to get San Francisco the early lead. It was Brandon’s sixth hit in this four-game series and his 12th home run of the season.

The Giants would get a bit more offense in the 3rd inning from the other Brandon. Shortstop Brandon Crawford would hit in Marco Scutaro with a single to left to make it a four-run lead for the Giants. Crawford would end up going 3-4 on the day and ended the series with six hits as well.

The Brewers wouldn’t get any runs until the 9th inning when Lincecum was out of the game. With a man on third with one out, Brewers shortstop Jean Segura hit an RBI single to left off of Giants Closer Sergio Romo. The run didn’t count against Romo, however, as the runner who scored, Khris Davis, hit a double off of Sandy Rosario to leadoff the inning.

Segura would end up stealing 2nd in the 9th but it didn’t matter matter as Romo got Jonathan Lucroy to pop out to 1st and then struckout Carlos Gomez to end the game.

The Giants win ended up splitting the series at 2-2. The Giants did take game one by a final of 4-2. A three-run 8th inning would break a 1-1 tie that gave San Francisco enough cushion to win the game.

The Brewers would strike back in game two winning by a final of 3-1. Matt Cain (L, 7-7) pitched seven strong innings but ended up with the loss partly because of Buster Posey’s errant throw in the 4th inning. The reigning NL MVP was trying to get a Norichika Aoki caught leaning at third but the throw went past Pablo Sandoval and into shallow left field. That allowed Aoki to score breaking the 1-1 tie.

Milwaukee ended up taking game three as well by a final of 6-1. The Giants had a 1-0 lead going into the 8th until a RBI infield single by Jeff Bianchi tied the game followed by a throwing error by Giants starter Madison Bumgarner (L, 11-7) which gave the lead to Milwaukee. A couple more runs scored on a Aoki single later in the inning followed by two more in the 9th was enough to beat the Giants on Wednesday night.

The Giants now say goodbye to the Brew Crew and welcome the other Orange and Black to AT&T Park, the Baltimore Orioles (63-51), for a three game series. San Francisco’s probables are Ryan Vogelsong (2-4), Chad Gaudin (5-2), and Matt Cain (7-7). Ryan Vogelsong will be activated from the disabled list Friday and start that night. Vogelsong’s has been out since May 20th due to a hand injury.

Baltimore’s probables are Chris Tillman (14-3), Wei Yin Chen (6-4), and Bud Norris (8-9).
