For rookies, training camp is about learning where they’re supposed to be on every single play. That’s been one of the main focuses for New York Jets’ defensive lineman Sheldon Richardson.
A lot is expected from the thirteenth overall pick in this year’s draft. He’ll be called on to be a force for a defensive line that struggled last season, particularly when it came to rushing the passer.
At 6’3″, 294 pounds he could gain some weight, although with his current stature he’s extremely explosive. Richardson’s motor and the fact that he doesn’t give up on plays will keep him on the field this season. Coaches love seeing that in their players, especially from a young guy.
In the Jets’ first preseason game Richardson showed off his great instincts. He made three solo tackles and looked like he was understanding the defensive schemes the team was using.
The rookie is still very raw, but as he continues to learn more everyday Richardson will become an integral part of this defense.
