Mathis’ RBI Double Lifts Marlins to Win over Giants; Avoid Sweep

Catcher Jeff Mathis hit in the first run for the Marlins as well as the winning run.

A Mathis’ double in the 8th inning off of Giants reliever Sandy Rosario would score in Ed Lucas from first to give the Marlins a slim one run lead. Mathis would get tagged out at third trying to stretch it into a triple but the one run was enough to get Miami (47-75) a 6-5 win over San Francisco (55-68).

Mathis ended up going 2-3 on Sunday with a walk. His first hit of the game was a solo home run to left center, his third big fly of the season.

This game actually started with a 2-0 Giants lead with a two-run home run by Hunter Pence in the 1st inning. It was Pence’s 15th home run of 2013 and his first long ball since July 13th when the team was in San Diego.

Pence would go 2-5 and hit his third RBI of the game in the 5th with a single to right scoring in Gregor Blanco from 2nd. That tied the game at 3-3.

However, Giants starter Madison Bumgarner would give the lead right back to Miami in the bottom half of the 5th on a wild pitch.

San Francisco would regain the lead in the 7th. First, tying the game with a solo home run by Brandon Crawford, his eigth of the year. Later in the inning, Hector Sanchez doubled to deep left to get Pablo Sandoval in from 1st.

The Marlins would tie the game again in the bottom of the 7th with an RBI double by second baseman Donovan Solano. Miami then took the lead in the 8th with Mathis’ double.

The rest of the series went San Francisco’s way. Giants took a high scoring game one 14-10. Hunter Pence was the star going 3-4 with five runs batted in.

Sandoval didn’t do too badly either going 4-4 with 3 RBI’s. And Hector Sanchez only had one hit but it was a three-run home run in the 4th which gave the Giants a seven-run lead at the time.

Game two didn’t have nearly as many runs for either side, but still a 6-4 Giants win. Matt Cain (W, 8-8) went seven innings on the mound allowing just two runs on Giancarlo Stanton’s home run in the 6th.

The Giants offense did well scoring on a couple of infield hits, a walk, and a triple. They even plated a run in the 4th inning when Marlins starter Henderson Alvarez (L, 2-2) committed a balk allowing Buster Posey to score from 3rd.

The Orange and Black come back to the Bay Area to take on the team from the Bay State, the Boston Red Sox (73-53), in a three game series. San Francisco’s probables are Tim Lincecum (6-12), Ryan Vogelsong (2-4), and Chad Gaudin (5-2). Boston’s probables are Jon Lester (10-7), Jake Peavy (9-5), and Felix Doubront (8-6).
