It was a pitcher’s duel until the Kung Fu Panda extended the lead in the 8th.
Pablo Sandoval hit a two-run triple in the 8th inning off of Pirates starter A.J. Burnett (L, 6-9). After a pitching change, Sandoval would score on a Joaquin Arias’ double two batters latter. San Francisco (58-72) would win by a final of 4-0 as they earn a 2-2 series split against visiting Pittsburgh (76-54).
“It was exciting to drive in those runs,” Sandoval said. “The team needs wins. I lost 20 pounds and I’m moving around better too.”
Sandoval went 5-13 in the series with two of those hits coming in the win on Sunday.
Ryan Vogelsong (W, 3-4) outdueled A.J. Burnett going eight innings allowing just two hits and one walk while striking out five. Burnett, meanwhile, had four earned runs counted against him in 7 1/3 innings.
“That’s one of the best pitched games we’ve had,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said of Vogelsong’s start. “It was fun to watch. He put on a show on the art of pitching. He was comfortable throwing any pitch at any time.”
It was Vogelsong’s fourth start since coming off the disabled list (broken finger) and his first win since May 20th.
Pirates’ batters were 0-4 with runners in scoring position with three of those failed chances coming against Vogelsong.
The Giants got on the board in the 3rd inning with an RBI single by Buster Posey with runners on the corners. Posey went 2-3 with a walk and had six hits in the series.
The first two games of the series did not go the Giants way. The Pirates took game one with a huge 10-5 win. A seven run 5th inning turned out to be the difference giving Pittsburgh the lead.
Giants starter Matt Cain had to leave the game early in the 4th due to being struck in the throwing arm by a line drive off the bat of Pirates first baseman Gaby Sanchez. He’s been put on the 15-day DL with a right forearm contusion.
Game two was a 3-1 Pirates win. Giants were winning 1-0 through six innings until Pirates shortstop Clint Barmes hit a three-run home run off of Madison Bumgarner (L, 11-8) in the 7th. It turned out to be enough for Pittsburgh.
San Francisco turned it around starting in game three with a 6-4 win. The Giants’ lineup managed to get four runs off of Francisco Liriano (L, 14-6) in the 1st inning. Liriano had to leave after four innings having thrown 102 pitches.
Tim Lincecum (W, 7-13) got the win going 5 1/3 innings allowing three earned and striking out eight.
The Giants now hit the road for nine games, starting with a three-game series in Denver to face the Colorado Rockies (61-71). San Francisco’s probables are Barry Zito (4-9), Yusmeiro Petit (0-0), and Madison Bumgarner (11-8). Colorado’s probables are Juan Nicasio (7-6), Chad Bettis (0-2), and Jhoulys Chacin (12-7).
