Orioles fall to the wrath of “The Sheriff’s” revenge, Yankees win series opener

As some might recall Mark Reynolds a.k.a “The Sheriff” was a former member of the Orioles from 2011-2012 before hitting the market as a free agent in the offseason signing with Cleveland. Then after ninety-nine games he was released by Cleveland and signed with the Yanks who were .500 since the All-Star Break (19-19) coming into tonight’s game. “The Sheriff” definitely got his revenge on the O’s for them not resigning him last offseason by going 3 for 4 with two doubles and an RBI as the Yankees win the first of three games 8-5.
Orioles starter Miguel Gonzalez, who hasn’t won a start since July 20th and has had four no decisions in his last five starts, picked the wrong game and series to have an off day as he earns the loss pitching four plus innings giving up six hits, seven earned runs, three walks and no strikeouts. What’s most sad about this is that up till the fifth inning Gonzalez only had given up one total hit, but when that fifth inning began he gave up five straight hits allowing New York to bat around the lineup and take the lead back after being down 4-2. Yankees Robinson Cano, Alfonso Soriano, and Ichiro Suzuki were all comind 5 for 15 with two homers, and six RBI’s.
Yankees starter C.C. Sabathia as everyone knows has not performed up to his usual standards this season, but is still dangerous to Baltimore. He came in tonight with a 17-5 record, a 3.19 ERA and 148 strikeouts in his career when facing the O’s. This season in his two starts against the O’s he has allowed four earned runs in each of them. Despite giving up one more run than usual tonight, pitching five and two-third innings, giving up seven hits, five earned runs, one walk and recording four strikeouts, he earned the win in this contest and has now won three of his last four.
Baltimore’s batting highlights in this game were Nick Markakis going 3 for 4 with three singles and an RBI and Danny Valencia going 2 for 4 with a two-run homer. The next game between these two AL East rivals will be tomorrow at 1:05pm/ET. Probables will be Scott Feldman (BAL 11-9 3.87) vs. Ivan Nova (NYY 7-4 3.14).
