Another solid start from Yusmeiro Petit.
The 28 year old pitcher from Venezuela managed to strikeout ten batters in six innings as the Giants (61-75) won 8-2 over the Diamondbacks (69-66) in Arizona. It was just Petit’s second start of the season and his second win.
“He’s come up here and done all that we could ask for,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said.
Both of the Diamondback runs would be counted against Petit. Arizona scored early in the game with an RBI double from third baseman Martin Prado in the 1st inning. Later, outfielder Adam Eaton would hit in A.J. Pollack on a single in the 7th.
Pollack got on base to lead off the inning with a single to center spelling the end for Petit’s day. But Petit did strike out Pollack two times earlier in the contest.
Petit also got some action in the batter’s box. Petit had an RBI single in the 4th to give the Giants a 4-1 lead.
Earlier in the inning with the game tied at 1-1, San Francisco catcher Hector Sanchez hit a two-run double to deep center to give the Giants the lead. Sanchez would later score on Petit’s single.
Giants outfielder Hunter Pence would then homer off of Patrick Corbin (L, 13-5) in the 5th inning to make it a four-run game with San Francisco out in front. Corbin wouldn’t return after finishing off the top of the 5th. Corbin gave up nine hits and five runs while striking out six batters.
Pence and Buster Posey would help ensure the win in the 9th. Posey, who was playing at first base for the day, hit a two-run double to left followed by Hunter Pence singling in Posey from second.
The Giants bullpen ended up not needing those extra three runs in the 9th. Santiago Casilla relieved Jose Mijares in the 7th and ended the threat. He then followed that up with a 1-2-3 8th inning. Then Michael Kickham, who had been an occasional starter for the Giants until recently, got an inning of work in the 9th.
San Francisco takes the series two games to one. The other win for the Giants came in game one of the series. Angel Pagan, who made his return from the disabled list that night, hit a leadoff double to start the game and would later score on a sac fly by Brandon Belt. That would be the only run of the game with San Francisco winning 1-0.
Arizona took game two in walk off fashion. After blowing a three-run lead in the 7th, the Diamondbacks managed to score the winning run in the bottom of the 9th with an RBI single by third baseman Eric Chavez. Final score, 4-3.
The Giants now travel to San Diego for the last of a nine game road trip to take on the Padres (60-76) in a three game series. San Francisco’s probables are Barry Zito (4-10), Madison Bumgarner (11-9), and Tim Lincecum (8-13). San Diego’s probables are Ian Kennedy (5-9), Robbie Erlin (2-2), and Eric Stults (8-12).
