The Giants are sure glad to have Angel Pagan back.
Pagan, who had come into the game in the 9th as a pinch hitter and stayed in the game at center field, managed to come up with the game winning hit in the bottom of the 11th against the visiting Diamondbacks. Pagan would score in Ehire Adrianza, who was making his major league debut by pinch running for Hector Sanchez, from 2nd to get a 3-2 walk off win for San Francisco (64-79).
The inning started off with a lead off single by Hector Sanchez off of Arizona reliever Joe Thatcher (L, 3-2). Adrianza then pinch ran for Sanchez and got over to 2nd while Gregor Blanco sac bunted his way safely to first base. Pagan would then come up and get a single to left off of Thatcher allowing the 24 year old Venezuelan to score from second.
“That was so exciting,” Adrianza said. “I have been waiting for this moment since I was 3 years old. It was pretty amazing and it feels great. As a pinch-runner it was an honor to win a game like that.”
Catcher Hector Sanchez had a good game himself going 3-5 including scoring in the first Giants’ run back in the 4th with a single to right off of Wade Miley.
Buster Posey, who had missed the previous four games with a finger injury, did play at first base in the final game of this series going 2-5. Posey would score after Sanchez’s single on a wild pitch by Miley.
The Arizona starter would settle down after the 4th inning. Miley would leave after seven innings allowing two runs on five hits and two walks while striking out three Giants’ hitters. He would get a no decision
Madison Bumgarner would end up with a no decision as well despite throwing six shutout innings allowing just four hits and striking out nine D’Backs. He threw 89 pitches on the day.
Santiago Casilla could not get the hold in the 8th inning allowing two runs to score. First, Eric Chavez sac flied to right allowing Chris Owings to score from third and Adam Eaton to advance to third from second. Eaton would then score a couple batters later on a single by A.J. Pollack to tie the game at 2-2.
Pollack would then steal second which lead to Casilla intentioanlly walking to the hard hitting Paul Goldschmidt.
Giants closer Serio Romo then came into the game to get Aaron Hill to line out to first to end the threat. Romo would then pitch the 9th allowing just one walk and striking out one batter.
It was reliever Javier Lopez (3-2) who would get the win as he relieved George Kantos in the top of the 11th.
Arizona and San Francisco each end up taking two games apiece in this four-game series. Arizona won game one on Thursday night 4-2 with all their runs coming in the 5th inning off of Ryan Vogelsong (L, 3-5). Vogelsong was unable to go beyond the 5th.
Giants took game two on Friday night 3-0 with Yusmeiro Petit (W, 3-0) having a Perfect Game broken up by the 27th batter. Pinch hitter Eric Chavez managed to single Petit’s payoff pitch to right as the ball landed on the grass just short of the diving Hunter Pence.
“It doesn’t get any closer than that,” Giants manager Bruce Bochy said. “A strike away and a couple feet away from catching it. Just a beautiful game that he pitched.”
Petit would get A.J. Pollack to ground out to third to at least get the complete game shutout and a standing ovation.
The D’Backs came back for a game three win on Saturday. Paul Goldschmidt’s RBI Triple in the 5th ended up being the difference in a 2-1 Arizona victory.
The homestand continues for the Giants as they now welcome the Colorado Rockies (66-78) to AT&T Park for three games. San Francisco’s probables are Tim Lincecum (9-13), Ryan Vogelsong (3-5), and Yusmeiro Petit (3-0). Colorado’s probables are Jhoulys Chacin (13-8), Jorge De La Rosa (16-6), and Juan Nicasio (8-7).
