The home run happy O’s find other ways to score runs in tonight’s win

In Baltimore’s last thirteen games 29 of their last 47 runs have come from hitting dingers (79%). Before tonight’s first game of the final season series between the O’s and Yankees 19 of the O’s last 24 runs have come off of home runs (62%). The O’s were homerless tonight but still managed to defeat the Yankees 4-2 by hitting singles, doubles and sac flies.
The man with the big bat for the O’s in this game was definitely Nick Markakis. Markakis, if you may or may not remember, was plunked in the wrist by a pitch thrown by C.C. Sabathia exactly one year and one day from tonight, this injury ended his season. He stood strong against the hard throwing left hander who ended his season last year with a pitch off his wrist and got a little payback by going 3 for 4 where he drove in one run and scored another run, accounting for two of the O’s four runs.
Yankee’s starter C.C. Sabathia did not perform tonight like a pitcher who had won four of his last five starts. He earned the loss tonight by giving up all four runs (three earned) in the seven and one-third innings he pitched. The lefty’s overall record at Camden Yards now drops to 0-4 while his season record drops to 13-12.
Orioles starter Chris Tillman earned his sixteenth win of the season, making him the first at least 16 game winner for Baltimore since 1999. He also tied his career high in strikeouts in a single game with nine tonight, the other Orioles pitchers struck out three more New York batters giving the pitching staff a total of twelve in this game. Closer Jim Johnson came into the game in the ninth to try to seal the win for the O’s and earn his 43rd save, and succeeded despite giving up a single to the first batter he faced.
Baltimore’s record when playing the American League East now improves to 28-30, the O’s hope to improve that some more with the rest of their remaining games being with AL East opponents. Tomorrow’s game with be at 7:05 pm/ET at Camden Yards. Pitching matchup will be Ivan Nova (NYY 8-4 3.02) vs. Miguel Gonzalez (BAL 9-7 3.98).
