Baltimore went into Fenway Park tonight for possibly the last time this season in attempt to sweep the Red Sox and prevent Boston from clinching a postseason berth. Oriole batters apparently brought the wrong tools to drive in runs and execute a swept series as they lose by a score of 3-1. Boston is guaranteed now a postseason berth while Baltimore possibly falls one or half a game behind in the AL Wild Card race.
If someone had to give this game a show title it would be called “The John Lackey Show”. The veteran right hander for the Sox, who has always been more than trouble when facing Oriole batters, pitched his first complete game of the season earning him his tenth win. Lackey allowed just two hits for only the second time this season, the last time he allowed only two hits was back on May 24th.
Orioles starting pitcher Chris Tillman, who has been hot as fire whenever facing Boston finally got his flame doused by earning the loss tonight. Tillman despite earning the loss tonight extended his streak for the most consecutive starts with three or less runs allowed against Boston to nine straight starts. He along with Lackey each struck out eight batters.
The O’s have a big four game series with the Tampa Bay Rays at the Trop which is crucial to the O’s chances off going to the postseason. If the O’s want to do well in that series they can’t afford to have 30 percent of their outs to be strikeouts like they were tonight. The first matchup between these two teams will be tomorrow at 7:10pm/ET, pitching matchup will be Jason Hammel (BAL 7-8 5.12) vs. David Price (TB 8-8 3.42).
