One night after being eliminated from the playoff hunt, the O’s earned their 82nd win of the year, ending a six game losing streak and guaranteeing them their second consecutive winning season. For any team in the league being knocked out of the playoff race is a huge disappointment, especially when it’s late in the season. The O’s refused to let that fact hang over them as they win tonight over the Blue Jays 9-5.
Tonight’s game was also an opportunity to see some of the players that have been called up from the minors to show what they can do. One of them was Orioles second baseman Jonathan Schoop making his major league debut after being with the team for almost a month. Schoop, in his first major league at-bat hit a single for his first major league hit in the third but he would not stop there, later on in the sixth he would also smack his first major league homer. People are saying that Schoop has a chance to be a permanent major league second baseman, and after tonight maybe that can happen soon. After the game he received not one but two of the classic shaving cream pies that a player gets to the face after a great game.
Other players in this game tonight really stood out, Ryan Flaherty hit two two-run home runs in this game. Flaherty, who was filling in at third base for Manny Machado who suffered a season ending knee injury, now has five homers and nine RBI’s when facing the Blue Jays this season. A total of nineteen batters between the Orioles and Blue Jays batted in this game, and only three of those batters did not have at least one base hit.
With this win tonight Baltimore is now 12-5 at home since 2012 against Toronto. Tomorrow the O’s and Jays face off again at 7:05 PM. The probable starters will be Buehrle (TOR) vs. Gonzalez (BAL) for the season rubber match.
