Let’s Have A Clean FIght

The New York Jets are the most penalized team in the NFL and head coach Rex Ryan is doing something about it.

Ryan has come up with a rule that if anyone commits a penalty in practice the rest of the team needs to get down and do push-ups, that includes the head coach and even owner Woody Johnson if he’s out there, while the player who committed the infraction watches.

The Jets were called for 20 penalties last week and still came away with a win, but they cannot expect the same result unless they clean up their act.

The Tennessee Titans have had their own problems with penalties as well.  In their first three games the team has 31 infractions, which is tied for third in the league.

These teams also boast the AFC’s leading rushers, Chris Johnson and Bilal Powell.

Powell is coming off a career best 149-yard performance and it wouldn’t be surprising to see New York give him a full workload again this week.  Tennessee’s defense has averaged just over 100 yards on the ground, so the Jets’ offensive line will have to win the battle in the trenches if they want to have success running the ball.

Quarterback Geno Smith has to protect the ball.  He’s accounted for six interceptions and one fumble so far.  The Jets as a whole are minus-6 in their turnover differential, while the Titans are plus-5.  The Titans, in fact, are one of only two teams that have yet to turn the ball over.  That may change if New York is able to get pressure on quarterback Jake Locker, like they did with E.J. Manuel last week.

Tough defenses and solid running attacks are the recipe for a smash mouth, grind it out game.  The Jets have been in plenty of those over the years.  With the opportunity to go 3-1 in the first quarter of the season New York will have to get down and dirty.

Final Score: New York 17  Tennessee 12
