Jets Stay Calm

Geno Smith kept calm and passed on. Even after the Atlanta Falcons scored a go-ahead touchdown with minutes remaining Smith didn’t lose focus.
The rookie quarterback took the New York Jets 55 yards down the field to set up Nick Folk’s game-winning 43-yard field goal as time expired. The 30-28 victory over the Falcons is another example of how much poise and confidence Smith possesses.
A week after turning the ball over four times the quarterback was nearly flawless, completing 16 of 20 passes for 199 yards, three touchdowns and zero turnovers.
The Jets got off to a quick start by scoring on their first three possessions. After blocking a punt on Atlanta’s opening drive Folk knocked down a field goal. New York then went on to score two touchdowns in the second quarter, Jeff Cumberland and Jeremy Kerley each catching one.
Heading into the locker room at halftime the Jets had all the momentum in the world. After a goal line stand on the final play of the half they were up 17-7. Falcons’ head coach Mike Smith made a gutsy call going for the touchdown rather than kicking a field goal and it ended up being costly.
The Jets’ defense was in Matt Ryan’s face consistently throughout the game. Muhammad Wilkerson made a huge play when he zoomed past the offensive line and knocked the ball out of Ryan’s hand. The Jets recovered the fumble and kicked a field goal on the ensuing drive.
Up until the fourth quarter when they scored two touchdowns to take the lead Atlanta couldn’t do much offensively. Without Steven Jackson the Falcons were only able to gain 68 yards on the ground.
New York played a clean game all around. They didn’t turn the ball over and committed six penalties for a total of 24 yards. When the game was on the line the Jets stayed focused and never skipped a beat.
