The ALSternative

We’ve enjoyed AC and lived through Marsh Madness. Now the Montreal Alouettes present to you fans, for your football entertainment, the Neis Wonder of The World!

As this season trudges on, the Montreal Alouettes have put together another winning streak, going out west and defeating the hapless Edmonton Eskimos in their own backyard by a score of 47-24. Once again, Josh Neiswander had himself a stellar game, throwing for 251 yards and FOUR touchdowns. And even when he threw his one interception, it still turned out to be a positive!

Late in the second quarter, Neiswander heaved a deep pass towards Brandon London and was picked off by Edmonton’s Joe Burnett. London had the presence of mind to immediately strip the ball and the ensuing fumble was recovered by Eric Deslauriers, whose had a penchant for being in the right place at the right time on the football field.

Unfortunately it meant the end of a two game streak when Neiswander had thrown ZERO interceptions, something that no QB on the Alouettes could say in 2013. It took Josh a bit of time to find his groove, but he’s really come on strong and will definitely give the Alouettes pause for consideration when it comes to the inevitable task of permanently replacing Anthony Calvillo.

I was disappointed in Neiswander’s first CFL start versus BC, where he was yanked after a lacklustre series and Tanner Marsh came in and wowed the entire CFL with his play. But now that this is his team for the time being, Neiswander has been steady and unflappable.

He may not have the flash of Marsh or the wiliness of AC, but Josh has done a great job of taking care of the football. Not even having Heisman winner Troy Smith or newly signed CFL veteran Alex Brink next on the depth chart has this young man concerned. He merely goes out and does his thing, which lately is win football games.

It also helps to have a pair of steady hands to catch these touchdowns. Luckily this past Saturday, Neiswander had not one pair, but TWO pairs of hands in both S.J. Green and Arland Bruce. Green catching touchdowns isn’t news anymore, but Bruce opening up for a pair versus the Eskimos was exciting.

He’s not shied away from wanting to be a big part of the offense this season and once again defenders have to keep tabs on #1 for the Als. Arland works his tail off in practice and it shows on the field. Always with a positive outlook online [1] and in person, you’re not gonna convince Bruce that he’s not gonna win the Grey Cup this year!

Once again Montreal’s defense was simply outstanding versus the Eskimos, at one point holding Edmonton to a mere field goal well into the fourth quarter. And this is a defensive unit that was missing some key players such as Scooter Berry, Alan-Michael Cash and Shea Emry. But everyone has stepped up and really made this team what it is; a nightmare for opposing quarterbacks to face.

It seemed inconceivable even just two weeks ago, but the Alouettes could still actually win the Eastern division! It would take an epic collapse on the part of the Toronto Argonauts, but it’s still a possibility. But in all reality, this team will likely have to compete in two playoff games in 2013.

They can officially punch their ticket into the playoffs by winning their Thanksgiving match versus the Winnipeg Blue Bombers, who like the Eskimos, have had a season to forget. Anything beyond that will depend on these last few matches, all against divisional opponents. Proof positive that this Alouettes team is not one to simply give up in the face of adversity.

October is Breast Cancer Awareness month. And once again, one of the Alouettes’ finest is doing what he can to give back to his adopted community.

The Angry Bird himself, Kyries Hebert, is putting on his second annual TOUCHED soiree to raise awareness and proceeds of the event will go to both The Cedars Cancer Institute & The Quebec Breast Cancer Society. It will be live from the La Cage aux Sports located at the Bell Centre on October 18th at 6pm. You can order tickets by calling (514) 787-2521. [2]

Last year’s event featured a lot of Alouettes players showing their support for such a great cause. Be sure to check it out if you can and let our man Kyries know that his all of hard work is appreciated.

Who doesn’t love a cool baseball cap? The folks at New Era have commissioned a player from each CFL team to design some new hats to be sold at CFL stadiums and at cflshop.ca. Representing the Montreal Alouettes is the electrifying S.J. Green, who can usually be spotted after the game rocking one of his many, many New Era caps.

Green met with the design team at New Era and created some pretty sweet-looking Alouettes hats, each one featuring a stencil of his infamous 2010 leaping catch vs. Saskatchewan on the back. Check the story out here:

These awesome hats will be available at the next home game this coming Monday. Or you can order online at zonerouge.montrealalouettes.com [4]. I’m not a big fan of wearing hats myself, but I really dig the Angry Bird Cap [5]. And be sure to follow Soloman Junior [6] himself on Twitter.

Hope to see everyone this Monday at Percival Molson Stadium as the Montreal Alouettes take on the Winnipeg Blue Bombers in their annual Thanksgiving Day match. The tailgate will be rocking and the Alouettes will need you fans to bring the noise as they close in on that final CFL playoff spot.

GO ALS GO!!!
