Jets Struggle Against Steelers

Some people may look at Sunday’s game as a step back for the New York Jets, but that’s not necessarily the case.

The Pittsburgh Steelers came into this game with an 0-4 record, but they are a much better team than that.  After forcing zero turnovers in their first four games they intercepted two of Geno Smith’s passes, both of which were in the red zone, and came away with a 19-6 victory.

Having a short week to prepare, Smith did not look nearly as sharp as he did last Monday night.  The Jets were able to sustain a few drives, but failed to get in the end zone.  With less than four minutes remaining New York drove down to Pittsburgh’s 12-yard line.  Geno Smith dropped back for a pass, was hit by Jarvis Jones as he released the ball and Lawrence Timmons intercepted the throw to lock up the Steelers’ first win of the season.

Ben Roethlisberger looked like the quarterback Pittsburgh was used to seeing behind center.  He was tough to take down and made big plays when he needed to.

The Jets had an opportunity to sack Roethlisberger in the end zone early in the game, but he was able to break away from the pressure.  New York did bring him down a few times though.  Muhammad Wilkerson chipped in with a sack and now has a total of five on the season.

Antonio Cromartie did not play his best game this week.  He played through a knee injury and it turned out to be costly.  On Pittsburgh’s first possession of the second half Emmanuel Sanders turned on the burners and beat Cromartie on a 55-yard catch that he took all the way to the end zone.

The Jets failed again to win back-to-back games and are now 3-3.  Smith continued his inconsistent play and accumulated a quarterback rating of 6.5.  Aside from the halftime ceremony honoring Jets legend Marty Lyons into the Ring of Honor the home crowd did not have much to cheer about.
