Last week the New York Jets’ defensive backs had to deal with a depleted wide receiving corps. That isn’t the case this week.
The secondary will have the pleasure of covering superstar wide receiver A.J. Green. The Cincinnati Bengals’ phenom is third in the league with 619 receiving yards and has scored five times. He’s the type of player who can score a touchdown every time he runs a route.
The Jets held New England’s receivers to a total of 104 yards last week. They’ll have to do another great job covering Cincinnati’s wideouts and force someone other than Green to beat them.
New York’s defensive line has been a focal point of this team. Muhammad Wilkerson has continued his great play and rookie Sheldon Richardson is looking more and more comfortable every week. With the line playing the way it is Rex Ryan is able to drop more guys into coverage and still get pressure in the backfield.
The Bengals also play tough defense though. At this point in the season they have the thirteenth ranked pass defense and are eighth against the run. They suffered a big loss last week when top cornerback Leon Hall tore his right Achilles tendon.
Geno Smith has struggled to stay consistent this season, but this could be the week he helps the Jets string back-to-back wins for the first time this year. Cincinnati’s defense gave up over 350 yards in the air to the Lions’ Matthew Stafford last week, so they’re vulnerable. When Geno and the offense play mistake free football good things happen.
Final Score: New York 24 Cincinnati 20
