Damage Control

The New York Jets will have to have amnesia this week because whatever it was that happened last Sunday should be erased from their memory.

Drew Brees and the New Orleans Saints are coming in guns hot to MetLife Stadium.  They’ve been giving defenses fits the entire season and Brees is locked and loaded.  But the scary part about New Orleans isn’t their offense, it’s the fact that they’re playing great defense.

Defensive coordinator Rob Ryan has turned this unit into one of the top squads in the league, giving up a mere 17.1 points per game.  That could mean trouble for Ryan’s twin brother.

Rob and Rex Ryan are both crafty with their blitz schemes and it has shown this season.  The Jets and Saints are both in the top ten in team sacks.  On the other side of the ball, New York has been sacked the second most in the entire league, which doesn’t bode well for quarterback Geno Smith.

The Jets have seen what happens to Smith when he’s under pressure and it is not pretty.  New York’s offensive line needs to protect the rookie and give him a chance to make plays and continue drives.  The best way to stop the Saints high-flying offense is to keep them off the field.

Brees’ favorite target, tight end Jimmy Graham, has been limited by a foot injury, but that didn’t stop him from scoring two touchdowns last week.  Whether it’s safety Antonio Allen or cornerback Antonio Cromartie covering Graham they need to bump him and make it difficult to get any kind of spacing.  He’s a huge target and even with the smallest window Brees has been able to get him the ball.

New York’s defense can set the tone for the entire team.  The big guys up front have to make it difficult for Brees to find his receivers.  If the defense keeps the Jets in the game anything is possible.

Final Score: New Orleans 28  New York 20
