Goalies fighting each other = over 120 minutes of total penalty time

In this game between new division rivals the Washington Capitals and the Philadelphia Flyers there were a total of 124 penalty minutes between the two teams. This was all thanks to an all-out, “Slap Shot” style ice brawl in the third period that not only skaters but goalies Braden Holtby and Ray Emery took part in. The Caps mercilessly shutout the Flyers in the end 7-0, without captain and leading scorer Alex Ovechkin.
Washington, who usually does well when Alex Ovechkin is not in the lineup (12-8-2 after tonight), was able to defeat Philadelphia at the Wells Fargo Center for the first time in two years. The Caps outshot their opponents tonight for the first time since October 19th of this season. They also scored six of their seven goals in the second period, which ties a Caps record for most in one period, that game was on October 30, 2010 when the Caps played the Flames.
A line group that has been continuing to step up for the Caps has been the line of Jason Chimera, Mikhail Grabovski and Joel Ward. Coming into this game tonight the three combinded for five goals and five assists in the past three games, and in tonight’s game they combind for four goals and six assists. Ward recorded a hat-trick, Chimera scored a goal and had three assists and Grabovski had three assists.
One side note, the original record for total penalty minutes in one NHL game is held by the Flyers. It was back in 2004 on March 5th in Philly when the Flyers and Senators totaled 419 penalty minutes, and those goalies fought in that game too. Next game for the Caps will be Saturday at the Verizon Center as they return home to square off with the Florida Panthers, game time is 7:00pm/ET.
