Caps fail to bounce back from Wednesday night’s slaughter

The Washington Capitals this November have been hot, winning ten of their last fifteen games outscoring opponents 32-24. In Wednesday night’s game with the Penguins they got shut out and tonight they could not get back on track playing the Montreal Canadians who they have beaten seven out of the last ten times they have played them at home. The final score of this game was 3-2 in favor of Montreal, the road team. In last season’s series between these two teams the road team won each game.
Tonight’s game was also a battle of backup goalies as the Caps Michael Neuvirth went up against the Habs Peter Budaj. Budaj, who had a 3-1-1 record this season coming into this game beat the Caps for the first time, after four failed attempts, with 27 saves. He also still has not allowed more than two goals in four of his last five starts this season. The Caps Michael Neuvirth showed everyone tonight why he has not started a game in goal since Nov 9th as he gave up all three of the Habs goals in the first period but still recorded 37 saves.
Caps forward and captain Alex Ovechkin before this game tonight had nine points in his last eight games and 32 points in his career when playing the Canadians. He was able to score points 33 and 34 tonight with two goals making this his 81st multi-goal game of his career. Ovie not only leads the NHL in overall goals this season but in home goals with thirteen now. Washington this week has had streaks of seven straight goals scored by opponents before they have scored and four straight periods without scoring a goal.
Hopefully the Caps can fix their problems soon as their next three games are against Canadian teams. Their next game will be tomorrow in Toronto as they square off with the Leafs. The Caps are 2-1-1 so far in back-to-back games and have a total of 17 games that are back-to-back.
