Mathieu Tore ACL, LCL Sunday

GLENDALE, Ariz.- The initial reports couldn’t state anything for certain, and there was still an MRI needed for confirmation, but Tyrann Mathieu’s expression said it all on Sunday: his ACL was torn.
The rookie defensive back went down returning a kickoff in the third quarter during Sunday’s win against St. Louis. NFL.com’s Ian Rapoport reported Mathieu tore both his ACL and LCL after tests confirmed the Honey Badger’s injury.
During the post game press conference, Cardinals head coach Bruce Arians said he didn’t expect Mathieu to be back by training camp. After seeing what Robert Griffin III is currently experiencing, hopefully Mathieu isn’t all in for week one either. Tearing his LCL will force Mathieu to wait longer until he can receive surgery, because that injury requires more time to heal than other ligament tears.
This is an unfortunate end to what has been an impressive season for Mathieu. His big-play ability on defense had made him an early candidate for NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, and the Cardinals secondary will miss his presence as the team moves forward for a playoff spot. Hopefully he makes a strong recovery and stays away from the fast food, because Mathieu’s instincts don’t come around every day (especially in the third round).
