Ravens Need to Soar Over Lions on Monday Night

The Ravens will take on the Lions tomorrow for Monday Night Football at Ford Field. It’s sure to be a close game, but here’s an overview of what to expect.

The Ravens need to establish a run game and it all starts with the Offensive Line.  Look for pro-bowler Marshall Yanda and the rest of the O-Line to control the line of scrimmage.  Running Back Ray Rice has not put up the numbers he has in the past seasons. Rice is an explosive runner with big play capability which came out a little bit last week. Although it’s late in the season, watch for him to have a breakout game as well as Joe Flacco.  The Superbowl MVP quarterback needs to have a great game.  Good decisions and solid footwork from Flacco will excel the offense’s production and help them clinch a Wild Card playoff spot.

The Ravens defense has it’s work cut out for them this week.  The biggest task is containing Detroit’s star receiver, Calvin Johnson a.ka. Megatron.  Detroit averages almost 300 yards per game passing, the clear majority of them to Megatron who has over 1300 yards receiving already this year.  The defensive line needs to focus on getting pressure on quarterback Matthew Stafford and limiting his time to make his reads.  This in turn will help the secondary as they can be more aggressive and won’t have to cover receivers as long.  Look for Jimmy Smith and LaDarius Webb to control the secondary while Terrell Suggs and Elvis Dumervil hunt down Stafford.

Sending the field goal unit out on the field is one of the most comfortable decisions Head Coach John Harbaugh can make.  Kicker Justin Tucker has been extremely reliable for the Ravens, making 29 of his 31 field goals attempts this year. An area where Baltimore can really make a difference is on Punt Return and Kick off Return.  Return Specialist Jacoby Jones is an elusive speedster who has a nose for the end zone.  Jones returned a kick off last week for a touchdown in the fourth quarter to help his team seal the win against the Vikings.

The Ravens and Lions face-off will be a battle until the end making for a perfect Monday Night game. This is a very important game for the Ravens, if their dreams are in the post season they will need to beat the Lions to help them clench the Wild Card spot.
