Mike Munchak Future is in Question

After last season’s disappointing 6-10 season, Head Coach Mike Munchak and the rest of the Titans front office were adamant about improving this team. They spent big time money on free agent’s like Andy Levitre, Bernard Pollard, Delanie Walker, and Sammie Hill. The team did indeed look much improved on paper, and Munchak was so confident in his team that he made a promise to all of the fans before the season by saying “we won’t disappoint”. Well flash forward 15 weeks and the Titans are sitting at 5-9 and staring at yet another top 10 draft pick.
It gets worse for Titans fans unfortunately. After starting the season 3-1, and the only loss came in overtime against Houston, the Titans have gone 2-8 in their last 10 games. One of those losses gave the Jacksonville Jaguars their first win on the season. They are now just one game ahead of those Jaguars. But wait there is more! Mike Munchak has been the coach of the Tennessee Titans for almost 3 years now, and the Titans are 4-12 vs the AFC South in that time, and he is 0-4 this season. Those kind of numbers would get anyone fired. . . but wait there’s more! He has lead the Titans to an impressive 2-18 record vs teams with a winning record, including having lost 13 straight games. His last win came in the final week of 2011 vs the Texans when Houston rested their starters.
Despite all of that, some believe that Munchak can save his job by winning these last two games of the season. . . against the Jaguars and Texans! They have a combined record of 6-22 this season! I think its insane that the Titans will decide his future on two games against two of the worst teams in football. You don’t win super bowls by beating teams with double digits losses on the season. It really makes me question the Titans management. However, it could be that they are just blowing smoke because they already know the future of Munchak. I honestly don’t know what to make of his comments, but of the interview segments I have heard Tommy Smith sounds like he really likes Munchak. Munch is a nice guy but you know the saying “nice guys finish last”.
Now for the Titans fans that want Munchak gone the news gets even worse. Mike Munchak in his 3 years as head coach has compiled a record of 18-7 vs teams with a losing record and guess what the Titans play 2 more teams with a losing record. This means that “Munch” has a real chance to save his job and return to the sidelines in Nashville for at least one more season.
On a side note, new President and CEO Tommy Smith better be careful this offseason because first impressions are extremely important. He could easily lose the fan base over bringing Munchak back. Fans have already stopped showing up to games and even the ones that do, leave early. My hope is that regardless of what happens these next two weeks, Tennessee is looking for a new head coach. Sure the team plays hard and doesn’t quit, but if you aren’t winning games no one cares how hard you played. Did the Titans have some crucial injuries? Sure, but that’s part of it. You have to be able to make adjustments in the NFL and that’s something that Munchak has failed to do. Tommy Smith made the statement that the Titans aren’t “in the losing business” and yet that’s all Mike Munchak has seemed to do.
It’s time for change in Tennessee and this time let’s do it right! Don’t hire someone who used to play for the team 20 years ago or someone who has been loyal to our organization for so long. Don’t get me wrong loyalty is important but it just hasn’t panned out for the Tennessee franchise in the past. Instead, let’s hire someone who can develop players and make adjustments. Someone who can battle through some of your starters getting injured. A coach who can win games against good teams, a coach who can beat the other 3 teams in the AFC South, and a coach who can take this young talent that we have in Nashville and bring us a Lombardi Trophy!
