Fehr has a 300th career Caps game to remember

Washington Capitals right winger Eric Fehr, who just last season played, was released, and then was brought back by the Caps, appeared in his 300th career Washington Capitals game and made it count. He scored the go-ahead goal in the third period to help the Caps prevail over the New York Rangers 3-2 after he was robbed for a goal in the second period due to video review. Fehr now has three goals in his last six games and the Caps have ended their two game losing streak.
The Caps in the month of December have been productive on the power play (13-41, 31.7% after tonight) as they have been all season ranking 1st in the NHL. Defencemen Mike Green scored the loan power play goal for the Caps tonight and they now have had at least one power play goal in nine of their last eleven December games. Nicklas Backstrom had a goal and an assist in this game tonight and has now recorded 17 points in his past eight games.
Caps goalie Philip Grubauer recorded 38 saves facing the Rangers who were the team Grubauer earned his first NHL win against earlier this season. Grubauer is now 5-1-1 since being recalled from Hershey (AHL). Rangers goalie Cam Talbot, starting in place of goalie Henrik Lundqvist, the second active leader in career shutouts against the Caps, had not given up more than three goals in nine of his last ten starts this season before tonight.
Some Rangers players despite this loss kept hot streaks alive for themselves. Left winger Benoit Pouliot extended his consecutive games with a point streak to six with a power play goal in the first. Other left winger Carl Hagelin also scored a short handed goal tonight and now has four goals in the last six games.
Tonight was the first time this season in the series between these two teams that the home team actually won (10/16 NYR 2 @ WSH 0, 12/8 WSH 4 @ NYR 1). Washington’s next game will be with the Buffalo Sabers in Buffalo this Sunday, game time 5:00pm/ET.
