In tonight’s Caps game against a Minnesota Wild team, that came in with the fifth lowest goal total in the NHL (96*), the Caps were defeated by a score of 5-3 on just 11 Minnesota shots. Washington losses their fifth game out of their last six and still remain winless at the Xcel Energy Center all-time (0-6-1 after tonight). The Wild on the other hand win back-to-back games for the first time in three weeks and extend their homestand record to .500.

Braden Holtby, starting in goal for Washington for the first time since December 21st, allowed all five Wild goals, four of them in second period. Three of those goals were scored by Wild defencemen Ryan Suter giving him his first career hat trick, two of those goals came on the power play. Not only was that his first ever hat trick but it was also the first hat trick by a defencemen in Wild history.

The Caps gave up three power play goals tonight, the last time they allowed that many power play goals was back on November 27th this season in a 6-4 loss to the Ottawa Senators. Caps defenceman Mike Green on a high note recorded his 15th career two goal game and his first since April 27, 2013 against the Boston Bruins. Marcus Johansson added the other goal on a power play in the first period.

The Caps will have four days off to prepare for to face their old division foes the Tampa Bay Lightning Jan. 9th on the road. Game time will be 7:30pm/ET.
