Tennessee Titans fire Mike Munchak

Mike Munchak’s 31-year run with the organization is now over. He spent the last 3 seasons as the head coach and compiled at 22-26 record. He missed the playoffs all 3 seasons and only had one winning season.

The meeting between President/CEO Tommy Smith, GM Ruston Webster, and coach Mike Munchak yesterday ended with Smith and Webster saying, “we had a good discussion but no decision has been made”. Then there were reports that the Titans planned on bringing Munchak back for a fourth season. However, it was also reported that he would have to make staff changes. Everyone seeming thought he would do it, but we found out today that Munchak declined to do so.

He would of had to change his offensive coordinator Dowell Loggains, linebacker coach Chet Parlavecchio, defensive coordinator Jerry Gray, and long time friend and offensive line coach Bruce Matthews. Munchak declined and in many ways I don’t blame him. It would have forced Jake Locker to learn a whole new offense in a “make or break” season for Munchak and that’s risky business.  The changes he would of had to make would of made it very difficult for Munchak in the final year of his contract.  I think this works out for both sides.  Start watching for Munchak to Penn State to really pick up steam now.

One thing everyone tells you about Munchak is how loyal he is, and that rings true here. Mike chose loyalty over being the head coach of the Titans in 2014 and I think he made the right move. He can now move on and become the Penn State head coach and maybe even take his friends with him. I have a lot of respect for Munchak and wish him nothing but the best for him. He gave 31 years to this organization and I have no doubt he gave it all he had every single day. Sometimes it just doesn’t work out and that was the case here.

Now, where do the Titans go from here? Early names being thrown around are Seattle Seahawks defensive coordinator Dan Quinn and Dallas Cowboys special teams coach Rich Bisaccia. Both of them have previous ties to the Titans GM Ruston Webster. I will add a few more names to this list just my opinion though:
Cincinnati Bengals DC Mike Zimmer
Seattle Seahawks OC Darrell Bevell
San Francisco 49ers OC Greg Roman
Cleveland Browns DC Ray Horton
Cincinnati Bengals OC Jay Gruden

That’s just to name a few there are some really good candidates out there and I’m excited to see who Tennessee brings in
