The Washington Capitals came into Pittsburgh tonight hoping to get revenge from when the Penguins shut them out at the Verizon Center 4-0 back on November 20th. Instead they fall to a score of 4-3 and extend their losing streak against the Penguins to six. This loss tonight was the Caps third straight and their fourth in their last six games. Pittsburgh has now won thirteen straight games at home.
Twice tonight the Caps gave up a goal to their opponent three or less minutes after they scored a goal. In the last month before tonight they had let that happen seven different times. Penguins Olli Maatta and Jussi Jokinen each recorded a goal and an assist each. Taylor Pyatt, who was claimed off waivers by Pittsburgh from the New York Rangers scored his first goal as a Penguin tonight.
Some Caps highlights from tonight include forward Brooks Laich scoring a short-handed goal making it his eighth goal in 31 games played against the Penguins and his third straight short-handed goal this season. Forward Marcus Johansson recorded two assists in this contest and captain Alex Ovechkin scored his 34th goal of the season, and now has seven points in his last seven games. Starting goalie tonight Michael Neuvirth was able to stop 37 shots but could not keep the game winner out of the net.
Eight of the Caps next nine games will be on road in which Washington has a record of 8-9-4. Next game will be Friday as they travel to Columbus, Ohio to face the Columbus Blue Jackets, game time will be 7:00pm/ET.
