TAMPA, Fla. — If you were late at arriving at the Sun Dome, if you were stuck in a line waiting to purchase popcorn and a beverage or you were in the restroom before the game then you missed the best part of the game against the University of Louisville.
The Cardinals plowed through the University of South Florida 86-47, Wednesday night in front of 6,417 inside the Sun Dome, the Cardinals continued to defend their championship and are getting ready to make a serious statement for this year’s tournament.
University of South Florida basketball coach Stan Heath look out at his team on the court struggle with the offense, with the defense and basically play with no direction.
“They dictated and did whatever they wanted to do. We didn’t have any answer,” Heath said after the game. “I just thought we were a little bit in awe. You can’t play the jersey, you have to play the guys inside the jerseys. We were just kind of mesmerized.”
The Bulls stood on the court when they had the ball and the offense just stalled, there was no movement. The Bulls only made 36.4 percent of their shots from the floor.
Freshman forward Chris Perry led the Bulls with 10 points, freshman John Egbunu worked hard under the boards and led the Bulls with nine rebounds.
Senior forward Victor Rudd said after the game that he believed that the Bulls could’ve beaten the Cardinals if the Bulls were playing with a purpose and playing their game but that the Bulls would be ready for the next game.
“We want to come back and redeem ourselves,” Rudd said. “You don’t want to lose especially three in a row in conference
Rudd came into the game against the Cardinals with a scoring average of 15.8 points per game and he averaged 7.1 rebounds which leads the Bulls.
Against Louisville, Rudd finished the game with six points, five rebounds, he committed three turnovers in 31 minutes out on the court.
University of Louisville basketball coach Rick Pitino said his team stayed focused during the game and he thought that the Cardinals showed that they are a maturing team.
“We were really active defensively we got a lot of easy buckets off of our defense we tried to change up as much as possible and keep Rudd from getting a lot of attempts” Pitino said. “They played very well against Cincinnati and they just had an off night tonight.”
They Cardinals’ offense was balanced enough to have five players score double figures against the Bulls.
Leading the Cardinals offense, 6-5, junior Wayne Blackshear, he scored 16 points and Montrezl Harrell chipped in with 14 points and he hulled down 10 rebounds.
Heath said that his team just needs to let this game go and not dwell on it too much, he just wants his team to improve and not repeat the same mistakes when they step back onto a basketball court.
The Bulls will be back in action Sunday afternoon Jan. 25 2014, at the Pyramid in Memphis, Tennessee and face the Tigers of the University of Memphis.
The game is scheduled to start at 2 p.m.
