In this second meeting of three games this season between the Washington Capitals and the Detroit Red Wings the Caps held a three game winning streak against the Red Wings. The streak was broken when the game went to a seven round shootout in which the Red Wings Patrick Eaves scored the winning goal on backhand shot, a shot that half of the Caps shooters attempted and failed on. With this 4-3 shootout loss the Caps have now only won 5 of their last 20 games.
Red Wings forward Gustav Nyquist scored a goal tonight making it his 7th point in six games. Danny DeKeyser scored his first goal since November 15th of this season (17 games) and Drew Miller also added a goal for Detroit. Goalie Jimmy Howard, who returned tonight from a lower body injury recorded 26 saves and improves his record to 2-1-1 when playing the Caps. The Caps tonight were outshot by their opponent tonight for the first time in five games (1/19 at NYR 26-25).
Washington highlights tonight consisted of Jason Chimera and Alex Ovechkin recording a goal and an assist each. Ovechkin now has scored a goal in six of his last eight games and has five goals and nine points in five games. Defensively the Caps penalty kill unit shutdown the Detroit power play unit five times tonight and now continue their streak to 13 straight penalties killed.
The Caps will get a day off to prepare for a final rematch of the Red Wings on Super Bowl Sunday. Time of the game will be 12:30pm/ET at the Verizon Center, the game will be broadcasted by NBC.
