It took 19 days but the Washington Capitals finally came back together after the Olympic break to defeat the Florida Panthers 5-4. Although the Caps recorded five total goals tonight winger Troy Brouwer scored two of those goals on the power play in this season series finale between these two teams. Brouwer now has a three game goal streak and five goals in his last five games.
Washington has now won four of their last five games and have finally beaten Florida in regulation this season. The Caps still have not lost a game to the Panthers in regulation since February 1, 2012. Florida despite a few comebacks lead by forward Brad Boyes tonight have now lost six of their last seven games.
Capitals captain Alex Ovechkin, who was coming back from both a dissapointing Olympics and a family medical emergency, recorded three points tonight including the game winning goal in the third period. First line center Nicklas Backstrom scored a goal tonight for the first time since January 10th of this season and Brooks Laich scored his sixth goal of the season and had two assists. Goalie Braden Holtby recorded 34 saves tonight and remains undefeated when playing the Panthers.
There are 22 games left on the Caps schedule with 16 of those 22 being against current playoff contenders. The Caps next game will be an early Saturday afternoon game with the Boston Bruins in Boston at 1:00pm/ET.
