The Washington Capitals and the New Jersey Devils are not only both in the Metropolitan Division but in the Eastern Conference Wild Card race as well. It was New Jersey who came out the winner tonight by a score of 2-1. Washington suffered it’s fifth straight loss and still have only won one game against teams in their division (1-10-2).
The Caps haven’t beaten anyone in the Metropolitan Division since February 8th which was a 3-0 win over the Devils. Each of the teams power play units, which included the Caps no. 1 ranked unit, were blanked. New Jersey showed tonight why they permit the fewest shots in the NHL only allowing 25 total Washington shots, which is what the Devils are allowing per game.
One Caps highlight included Alex Ovechkin scoring Washington’s lone goal in even strength, breaking his streak of 16 straight games without an even strength goal. Center Nicklas Backstrom recorded an assist tonight and now has 10 points in his past 10 games. Goalie Jaroslav Halak despite this loss was able to stop 29 shots and Devils goalie Cory Schneider recorded 24 saves.
The Caps will now have to jump past three teams in front of them to make it to the playoffs. Their next game will be tomorrow in New York when they take on the Islanders. Game time will be 5:00pm/ET.
